December is “re-read DragonLance” month for me.
While “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Ring” were my first introduction to high-fantasy literature, the first series that I was an actual fan of was “The Dragon Lance” series.
I can still remember being 13 years-old and continuously borrowing my cousin’s boyfriend’s copies to read over and over and OVER again.
I remember being fascinated, entertained, heart-broken, and enraptured by the whole series as a young girl.
As a 40-something woman, I still am entertained but I have so much more life experiences that change how I view the story and character and it’s weird being able to see those different viewpoints now. It also helps I have “The Annotated Chronicles” version to compare my thoughts and feelings with the creator’s too.
Like, Raistlin. As a girl he was OH so romantic. Now I just find him to be a butt. A butt with some reasons as to why he is a butt, but a butt nonetheless. And Camaron? OMG! Don’t get me started on how dysfunctional he led with his twin! I also find myself more aware of the part women played in the series. Something my younger self never recognized was missing from LOTR.
Each time I re-read it, I find something else I’ve not noticed before.
And, even with all the things I still enjoy and find fault with in the series, Flint and Tasslehoff will never not get me to smile (and cry but I’m not thinking of that now!).
